Themes
Love: Love is a theme in the Hunger Games reflected of all the protagonists, Katniss Loves her family and friends as well they care about her as well. Peeta loves Katniss, and Katniss copes with her feelings for others wondering who she truly cares about for if it weren’t for love in this series of the Hunger Games Morality and Barbarity among the players would shift, then there wouldn’t be anything special about the novel. If Peeta never loved Katniss he may have never have given her the bread when they were younger and her family may have disappeared from the seam forever. There would be no rebellion forming in any of the Districts and no hope to motivate anyone during these hardships.
Love is probably the most important theme in the movie since it is mentioned in every chapter of the book, Peeta shows this especially through the games of the Quarter Quell where Katniss must foil Peeta plan to keep him alive instead of her staying alive and Peeta dying however they see different realities if one dies. Peeta knows that if he saves Katniss her family is there so she has to support them although Peeta family doesn’t need him However Katniss feels he owes Peeta a deb t and by him being crowned Victor of the Quarter Quell she can cut it even with him and that’s her dying wish. Peeta loves Katniss too much to let her do it.
Rebellion: Katniss and Peeta were crowned the victors of the 74th Hunger Games. The mockingjay was the symbol of an uprising anywhere, a symbol of hope! The tour was perfect to show how something as big as the Hunger games, the events were in the favor of how the game makers wanted it to be and how they made it turn the way they wanted or would have killed the annual tradition. Now the enslaved citizens believe this was the first necessary step and that Katniss is the shining ray of hope. She is the mockingjay. Katniss is the one to stand up against the capitol and their crimes and to free the remaining 12 districts of Panem from the Capitol. We see this as she goes to District 11, the first stop of her tour.
Fear: If it wasn’t for fear the districts would have rebelled long ago, after District 13 was destroyed, but it was fear that led them to believe that if they rebelled their district would follow a similar fate. This in the last chapter when Gale tells Katniss what happened in the end, District 12 was firebombed therefore it no longer exists. In Catching Fire people fear many things, losing others, dying, and being punished by being made a spectacle. Katniss feared all those things like everyone else did, however when she is threatened it will occur to those she holds most dear if she does not meet her end of the bargain, she must fulfill her promise to keep those she love safe to help cope and avoid facing her fears however she will when she goes to save Gale from his whipping.
Courage: Just about everyone has courage, big or small amounts, now what they lacked was the opportunity and potential to demonstrate it. When Districts 8 and 11 were giving rumors of an uprising you could tell these people were ready to defend their rights, they were overflowing with courage. Our victors also had tremendous amounts of courage they would die so the other could go home. Now that is immeasurable courage, many fear dying, although they would face their fears in the satisfaction that their ally would return home safely. Plutarch Heavensbee has incredible courage because he also coming from the Capitol as Head Gamemaker is also rebelling against the Capitol and what better way than following Katniss’ and Peeta’s example by using the Games to do his good deed.
